Ask Ross: Mounting Rolling Commercial Garage Doors and Hoods

Our new video and blog series, “Ask Ross” answers common questions from architects. Host Ross Baran, Clopay Corporation Architectural Design Support (ADS) representative, provides the insights that you need to integrate commercial doors into your design. Whether you’re an experienced architect or just embarking on your journey, stay tuned to get the information you need to tackle your next project!

Question: How does your door mount to our structure?

Answer: Our rolling steel products are supported by our *guides that mount to the jams of the wall opening. Both the weight and the loads of these doors will be imposed on these jams.

*Guides: Attach to the jambs and support the entire door assembly.

Question: How is the hood of your rolling door installed and mounted?

Answer: For rolling steel doors under 14 ft. wide, the *hood is supported by steel flats inside of the door’s bracket plates. For doors over 14 ft. wide, hood supports will be supplied due to the multi-piece hood construction.

The hood supports must mount to a header or structure to support the splice in the hood sections. Hood supports only hold the weight of the sheet metal hood—they do not structurally support the door.

*Hood: a cover used to hide the coiled curtain and shaft assembly.

Send us your questions about design, specifying garage doors, architecture, or anything where you could use a little extra support. We’d love to meet with you to collaborate on your next project!
